Revisiting some of the
important elements of success in a student’s life, Sports can be recognized as
an essential contributor in shaping a successful academic life of a student.
When we talk of sports,
it is narrowed down to the concept of playing ‘a’ particular game, or a
sport. When we talk of sports persons we often relate it with athletes or
the sports champions and most necessarily in India, cricketers.
How a student’s life is
associated with sports?
When we fail to
associate sports as a way of life, we fail to decipher the meaning of the word
‘SPORTS’ and its benefits to all the members of the society.
The purpose of
introducing sports in primary, secondary and university level of education is
still a disillusioned subject in India.
Sports is often
encouraged as a part of education system but now many perceive it as it being
‘education’ itself. Interest in any sporting activity allows students from any
academic background to boost their confidence and rejuvenate themselves as they
are exhausted by our rote learning system.
Sports field is the only
platform where all students can weigh their own potential and stamina to fight
and excel. A spirit of ‘do or die’ is generated giving each student hope to
perform better in the next round. This essentially helps students in training
their minds in the right manner and shaping positive attitude towards their
career, as they can acknowledge failure and success with equal zeal.
Universities must
encourage sports and ensure good infrastructural setups in the campus, for
students to choose their interest games (indoor/outdoor). This is the most
effective & efficient therapy as a part of improving the soft skills of the students, preparing them to take on the challenges in their respective fields
with the same sporting spirit.
Most of the educational
institutes facilitates compulsory extracurricular and physical
education once every week. This however does
not benefit students in long term as the goal to improve students’ state of
health and physical condition can be achieved through regular sporting
exercises.
Most of the Universities
have sports centers to engage their students in different sporting disciplines which
include badminton, table tennis, carom, cycling, basket ball, football and some
brain cracking games like chess and sudoko.
Experience has shown
that regular sports exercises are beneficial to students’ academic achievements
and shared training often brings students together.
