When you watch the Olympics or any sporting event for that matter, passion, drive and discipline take a whole new meaning.
In our day to day life, we let the tiniest of problems turn into obstacles. Our passion turns sour overnight and we put our hands up in defeat.
But an athlete or an Olympian medalist doesn’t recognize defeat. Losing and winning doesn’t define defeat. It’s defined by the battle that you lose to self pity, anger, jealousy and fear. Our worst enemies. But even though negative emotions will always remain in us, waiting for the right opportunity to escape, disciplining the mind can keep them in recess deep within us, not allowing them to surface very often.
Athletes know that perfect muscles don’t make a champion. It is the mind that allows the talented athlete to succeed. The mind tells the body how far to go or when to give up. If the mind gets tired or loses focus, the body will follow suit.
Of course we all can’t be Olympian gold medalists, but we all must realize that if we do put our mind to something, nothing is impossible.
It can start with little things like finishing a book you’ve been struggling with or finally learning how to swim or taking singing classes to sing in tune. We just need to dedicate ourselves wholly and completely to the situation we are presently in without being discouraged by a bad day, week or even month. So the negative emotions will never the better of us because the ‘better of us’ is destined for greater things.
