Manav Rachna Dental College: Providing Quality Dental Education

Manav Rachna Dental College was established in 2006 and is recognized for the BDS and MDS Degrees by the Ministry for Health & Family Welfare, Govt. of India and Dental Council of India. MRDC provides more than just education--it is a centre that is envisioned to focus on quality dental education and research besides providing affordable quality dental care to people. The College is professionally managed and has been nurtured and developed with the best of technical and professional infrastructure to suit the ever-increasing needs of modern day dental health care. At present, the permissible annual intake is 100 students at the undergraduate level and 21 (3 per specialty) at the postgraduate level across seven dental specialties. Post graduate programs are offered in Periodontology, Oral Medicine and Radiology, Pedodontics, Oral Pathology, Prosthodontics and Crown & Bridge, Conservative Dentistry and Endodontics and Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics.
The College has been accredited at Grade ‘A’ by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) in 2015. Innovation in teaching methodology and curriculum enrichment are the highlights of the educational experience which the student can expect on entering the undergraduate or the post graduate program at Manav Rachna. An experienced and dedicated faculty with appropriate use of audio visual aids in ‘smart’ classrooms helps the student to understand and grasp the subject more easily. The departments are well equipped with the state-of-the-art infrastructure and timely updated on any new advancement in the field to keep students abreast with latest studies/researches worldwide.

At MRDC, we strongly believe that along with didactic teaching, regular practicals/ seminars are important aspect of students’ learning. Students are further motivated to undertake field visits through various camps and workshops organized by the institution. Research is a top priority at MRDC. We strive to establish an all pervasive research environment, getting students and faculty involved in research and innovation. Students are encouraged to carry out research in emerging areas and quality infrastructure and guidance is provided for the same. Each department has its own laboratories and facilities, equipped to handle high-end research. The outstanding research work and the publications of faculty and students are recognized and rewarded both nationally and internationally.
Throughout the course, dental students will have close contact with the teaching staff, and senior students, which allows learning by example and peer review. The introduction of vertical integration in teaching methods initiated by the college is aimed at widening the horizon of the student whilst promoting a close bond in the student community. These integrated seminars involve presentations on different aspects of a topic by undergraduates (first through IVth BDS, Interns, Post graduates and faculty). An in depth literature analysis form ensures quality of presentation The institution is confident that such innovative changes in the curriculum will go a long way in personality development of the student in addition to enrichment of scientific knowledge. A further innovation to the teaching methodology is ‘horizontal integration’ in undergraduate teaching wherein subject teachers across different subjects jointly discuss a topic with a BDS batch. This has the advantages of generating greater interest in the student with multiple teacher interaction, saving study hours in the syllabus which can be used for additional topics in addition to better interaction and knowledge sharing between the knowledge givers.

The faculty at MRDC has a cordial relationship with students and act as Mentor, Guide and Friend.

Manav Rachna organizes anti-tobacco rally

A ‘No Tobacco Rally’ was organized by Manav Rachna Dental College on 31st May, 2016. What better way to mark ‘World No Tobacco Day’ to create awareness about Tobacco’s Harmful Effects. While the world was witnessing sessions over ways to educate people about the harmful effects of tobacco, it was a grand rally in Faridabad that set that the stage for saying ‘no’ to tobacco use.
The Rally started at 9.30AM from B.K. Hospital, Faridabad and ended at the head office of the Manav Rachna Educational Institutions at NH-5. The rally was part of MRDC’s institutional social responsibility in order to create awareness among masses about the harmful effects of tobacco use. The Chief Guest on the occasion was Dr. Gulshan Arora, Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Faridabad and Dr. Asim Das, Principal ESIC Medical College. Also present on the occasion were Dr M.M. Kathuria, Advisor, MREI; Dr N.C. Wadhwa, Vice Chancellor, Manav Rachna International University; Maj. Gen. (Retd) P.N. Awasthi, Advisor, MRDC and Raman Grover, President, Lions Club Lake City.

It is well known fact that more than 6 million people die worldwide every year, due to tobacco consumption. More than 5 million of those deaths are the result of direct tobacco use while more than 600,000 are the result of non-smokers being exposed to second-hand smoke. Another important fact is that Tobacco kills up to half of its users. Highlighting the impact of income on the overall standing of any country, the WHO reports also reveal that nearly 80% of the world’s smokers live in low and middle income countries.
The rally in course of its sojourn garnered much appreciation even from bystanders. More than 100 students of MREI joined in the initiative as they took to the streets carrying posters and shouting slogans to sensitize people towards the harmful effects of tobacco use and its life threatening effects.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Gulshan Arora, CMO, said, “The Anti Tobacco Rally being held on this significant day to create awareness against tobacco use is praiseworthy.” He stated further that for every cigarette taken, a person loses 5 minutes of his life!
Addressing the gathering, Dr. Asim Das, Principal ESIC Medical College, said, “One cigarette is enough to create a stairway to hell. The youth should not only resolve to say ‘no’ to tobacco but also encourage others to give up tobacco for good. This would ensure the creation of a tobacco-free nation.”
Dr N.C. Wadhwa, Vice Chancellor, MRIU said, “Tobacco use destroys not just an individual but also society as a whole. It is therefore our collective responsibility to fight the menace. Manav Rachna Educational Institutions has been working ceaselessly towards the cause.  It is heartening to see students take up the anti-tobacco cause at the Rally and encourage others to put an end to tobacco use.

A street play was also performed by the students of MRDC students that successfully conveyed the message to make the people aware of the harmful impact of tobacco, in any form.

A DAY WITH DENTAL STUDENTS.....

Clinics and Classes at MRDC can be a heady experience, as Ayushi Bhatia, CS, FET student of MRIU finds out....

I was assigned the task of spending a day with dental students and given my interest in the field, took up the offer instantly. Like all dental students, I woke up early at 6:30 am for this is what a dental student does daily. By 8:00 am, I was at MRDC, for students were barred entry into the class after 8:05 am. There was a system in place and everything was as per schedule. Once inside the class, it was not too difficult to follow the rules.

Sitting in the lecture room surrounded by a good number of dentists, or should I say, upcoming dentists, and wearing those white doctor aprons, gave me a feeling of being a dental student. But the truth lies within, I wasn’t one. The lecture hall was reverberating with new ideas but all of that seemed to be going over my head. I tried to focus, but somehow it was not my cup of tea. The next slot sounded interesting. It was the time for hospital rounds. I joined 3rd year MRDC students on this venture, and found myself at the Asian Hospital for an educational round--education for them and experience for me. We stepped into the dental ward of the hospital. We also attended lectures of the Hospital doctors and treated patients.

While I wasn’t treating patients (thank God!) but it was quite a pleasant experience watching the budding dentists working as dutiful professionals. The round got over and we moved towards MRDC. After a quick lunch, it was time for clinics. The year is divided into small clinical groups which start from third year and continues right through to final year. The clinical groups become close-knit and are friendly and reassuring, particularly for the daunting experience of seeing your first ever patient in the third year! In the third year clinic, the faculty members keep a watchful eye over the students for fear of mistakes. Next year they are likely to have more freedom. The students are looking forward to making decisions on their own and being in an environment that is more similar to private practice. As mentioned by others, this “typical schedule" is variable from week to week with other small classes thrown in, but it gives you a basic idea. These schedules must be hectic for them as it was exhausting for me but I eventually can’t complain. I enjoyed the day and made the best out of it.
